My name is Tina Siegel and I am reaching out to you in an effort to support The Memorial Fund for Philip M. Masterson. Phil’s life was tragically taken on September 5, 2011 due to a senseless act of violence. His Memorial Fund benefits The Cornerstone of Hope, which is a Christian-based organization, located in Independence, Ohio. Cornerstone offers free comprehensive grief support services to those seeking guidance after the death of a loved one and to the professional community who serves the bereaved. They are dedicated to providing support, education and hope for the grieving. It is their hope to extend a helping hand in the form of checks and/or cash to help those grieving with their expenses, rent, utilities, and anything else that is needed. Phil was my brother. Though not biological, he was every bit of family to me. I have been blessed to have the Masterson family in my life for the past two decades. Phil’s sister, Molly, has been my closest friend since we were in the fourth grade. Dr. Kevin, Georgeanne, Mark, Matt, Molly, Phil, and Jimmy Masterson are some of the most remarkable and caring people one could meet. Their faith and incredible strength during the most difficult of times was, and is, admirable and is a true testament of their characters.

Phil was one of the strongest individuals I have ever met. He excelled at anything he attempted and was quickly closing in on his dreams of becoming a firefighter and marrying the love of his life, fiancé Aya Hobbs. He had placed 25th out of over 2,000 hopeful firefighters in the Cleveland Fire Department Civil Service Exam and was planning his life with Aya. He was an extremely driven, compassionate and selfless person. Phil was known to rescue animals, provide comic relief for those around him, and was always willing to lend
a helping hand to anyone who may need it. His ever-present beard was the only thing that could outshine his charismatic and amusing personality. Phil has touched so many lives during his short time here, and was taken from us much too soon.

Last May, I ran the Cleveland Marathon for The Memorial Fund for Philip M. Masterson. The event was a great success thanks to the overwhelming support and enthusiasm offered by countless family, friends, and acquaintances. We were able to raise over $4,500, which Cornerstone of Hope used to help support families and individuals grieving the tragic loss of a loved one.

The Masterson Family and I would like to make this an annual event that grows bigger and better each year. This time around, we want a TEAM of people to participate in the run. Anyone who joins us for the race will be a part of “Team Phil” and is encouraged to obtain donors to sponsor each mile ran. You will wear an official “Team Phil” shirt during the race to denote you are running on behalf of the charity. If you are interested in running any of the four races offered (5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, of Full-Marathon), on Sunday, May 19, 2013 for “Team Phil”, you may register online at:

If you simply would like to donate to the cause without the race commitment, you may contribute using one of the two options:
1. You can purchase one of the 26 miles I will be running for a minimum of $40.00. You will be an official sponsor and your name will go on the back of the shirt I will wear at the race. There will be a celebration after the race on Sunday, May 19th from 3pm-7pm at PJ McIntyre’s Irish Pub. It is located in Kamm’s Corners at 17119 Lorain Ave, Cleveland, OH 44111. Tickets are $10 and include your admittance to the party and select food/drinks. All proceeds will benefit The Memorial Fund. Please join us in remembering Phil and enjoying good company. There will be auctions, raffles, t-shirts, music, and fun!
